Memorial Dyon de Jong / Jan Goemans in Kerkrade

You're standing at the corner of Nieuwstraat and Kokelestraat in Kerkrade. Right here, Nieuwstraat is the border: one side is the Netherlands, the other Germany. Back in the day, a row of concrete blocks ran down the middle of the street to mark the line. Now look down at the pavement. There's a memorial stone there, and it marks one of the darkest moments in this street's history.
