You're standing at Kerameikos, the old potters' quarter of Athens, northwest of the Acropolis. It's where the English word ceramic comes from. The potters settled here for the clay carried down by the little Eridanos river. Now look down. Most of the site lies seven to ten metres below today's street level, buried under centuries of mud from the river's floods.
