You're standing in the middle of the ancient Agora of Athens, at what was once one of the most impressive buildings in the city: the Odeon of Agrippa. Not much of it survives, so you'll need a bit of imagination. This spot used to be open space at the heart of the marketplace. Around 15 BC, a huge covered concert hall went up right here. It was a gift to the people of Athens from Marcus Agrippa, the Roman general who was Emperor Augustus's right-hand man. Agrippa actually lived in Athens for a few years around then.
