You're standing at Hadrian's Library, on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens. What you see is a ruin, but this was once one of the finest places in the city. The Roman emperor Hadrian had it built around the year 132. It only got the name library in the nineteenth century. In fact it was much more than that: a walled complex of roughly a hundred and twenty-two by eighty metres, with a library, reading rooms, lecture halls, gardens and works of art.
