You're standing at the Ancient Agora of Athens, at the north-western foot of the Acropolis. Today it's a field of ruins and trees, but in ancient times this was the heart of the city. People governed and held trials here, they shopped at the market here, and religious processions passed through. Agora literally means gathering place.
