You're standing at the Arch of Hadrian, right in the middle of Athens, beside busy Amalias Avenue. Take a moment to look up. This marble gateway is eighteen metres tall, and it has stood here since around the year 132. That's almost nineteen centuries. The marble comes from Mount Pentelicus, the same source as the Parthenon, though this is a lower grade. And here's the remarkable part: there's no cement or mortar between the blocks. The stones are held together by clamps alone.
