You're standing at Santa Pudenziana, on the Esquiline Hill in Rome. It's one of the oldest places in the city where Christians gathered. Notice how the church sits below the street? You enter through wrought-iron gates, and steps added in the nineteenth century lead down on both sides into a square courtyard. It's a neat way to see how far modern Rome has risen above the ancient city.
