You're standing on the Via Appia Antica, outside Rome's old city wall, by the basilica of San Sebastiano. Right beneath your feet lies one of the city's best-known catacombs. Take a look at the ground along the road. Notice how it dips here? That hollow gave this place its ancient name: in catacumbas, Greek for 'close to the cavity'. Over time the word spread to every underground cemetery. So every catacomb in the world is, in a way, named after this very spot.
