You're standing at San Sebastiano fuori le Mura, right on the ancient Appian Way. Fuori le mura means outside the walls, because you're beyond the Aurelian Walls of the old city. For centuries this was one of Rome's Seven Pilgrim Churches, the ones pilgrims visited in a single day. The road to Saint Paul Outside the Walls is still called Via delle Sette Chiese, the street of the seven churches.
