You're standing on the Via Appia, the ancient road heading south, right at the third milestone outside Rome. In front of you is the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, one of the best preserved monuments along this road. Look at that huge round drum sitting on its square base. It's almost thirty metres across, exactly one hundred Roman feet. Travellers coming to Rome from the south would have spotted it from far away, up here on its hill.
