You're standing at the Fort South of Spaarndam, on the Noorder Buiten Spaarne, just southwest of the village of Spaarndam. It's one of the forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, built to protect the capital. Look at the moat around the fort and the earthen ramparts. Those were laid out in 1884. The concrete, bombproof building wasn't finished until 1901. Together with its northern neighbour, this was one of the first forts made of unreinforced concrete. It's quite a bit smaller, though, with room for 177 soldiers and officers.
