You're standing on the Nieuwe Kerksplein in Haarlem, in front of the Nieuwe Kerk, the New Church. Look at the tower first. It dates from 1613, built by city architect Lieven de Key in the decorative style of the Dutch Renaissance. Now look at the church itself. It's plain, strict and classical. Two completely different styles, and that's no accident.
