You're standing at the Hofje van Guurtje de Waal, on the Lange Annastraat in Haarlem's Vijfhoek district. A hofje is a small group of almshouses around a courtyard. First, look at the gateway. Above it is the De Waal family coat of arms, and it's an unusual one: a Dutch lion with its head cut off, spouting blood. Some think it was a political statement against the House of Orange.
