You're standing on Whitehall, right among the government buildings of London, at the Cenotaph. The word comes from Greek and means 'empty tomb'. And that's exactly what you're looking at: a tall pylon of pale Portland stone, topped by a carved stone coffin. Nobody lies inside. Most of the dead of the First World War were buried close to where they fell, far from home. This empty tomb stands for their absence.
