You're standing at Westminster Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in England and Wales. Don't confuse it with Westminster Abbey, which is a different building. Look at the façade: red brick with white bands of stone, like a zebra in red and white. To British eyes it looks rather foreign. The architect, John Francis Bentley, took his inspiration from early Byzantine churches. The building is almost entirely brick, with no steel. The poet John Betjeman called it a masterpiece in striped brick and stone.
