You're standing at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Look at that shape: a huge oval of red brick, topped with a dome of glass and iron. The designers took their inspiration from the amphitheatres of the ancient world. Walk a little way around the building and look up. A terracotta mosaic frieze runs all the way round, hundreds of metres long, showing the triumph of the arts and sciences. Above it, large letters spell out why this hall exists.
