You're standing at Santa Balbina, a quiet basilica on the slope of the Aventine Hill. Locals call this corner the Little Aventine. The entrance to the Baths of Caracalla is right next door, yet it feels remarkably peaceful here. Start with the façade. It dates from the sixteenth century, so it's much younger than the church behind it. Then look at the monastery next to it, with its sturdy medieval defence tower. That monastery has been a nursing home since 1884.
