You're standing on Lincoln's Inn Fields in London, in front of three houses side by side. Together they make up the museum of Sir John Soane, an architect who lived here until his death in 1837. Look first at the middle one, number 13. It stands out with its projecting front of Portland stone. Soane added it in 1812, originally as three open loggias. Later he filled the arches with glass. To the left is number 12, a plain brick house. That was the first one he built, between 1792 and 1794. Number 14, on the right, he only bought in 1823, when he was already over seventy. He gave it a front almost identical to number 12, so the whole row came out nicely symmetrical.
