You're standing on Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, at the foot of the Lateran Obelisk. Follow that red granite needle all the way up. The obelisk itself is just over thirty-two metres tall, and with its base and cross it reaches almost forty-six. It was carved from a single piece of stone. It's the largest ancient Egyptian obelisk still standing anywhere, and the oldest one in Rome.
