You're standing at the Queen's House in Greenwich, a few miles downriver from the City of London. Take a look at that crisp white building. It looks modest, but it's one of the most important buildings in British architectural history. It was the first consciously classical building in the country. Architect Inigo Jones had just returned from a tour of Italy, from 1613 to 1615, bringing back the ideas of Andrea Palladio. The palace that stood here then was built of red brick. This white house must have looked revolutionary.
