You're standing on Via di Porta San Sebastiano, the old stretch of the Appian Way inside the city walls. Behind the wall along the road, tucked under a small hill, lies the family tomb of the Scipios. Look down to the end of the street. That's Porta San Sebastiano, with the so-called Arch of Drusus in front of it, which is really a piece of aqueduct. In Roman times this was a cemetery for leading families, just outside the city. Later the walls moved outward, and the cemetery ended up inside Rome.
