You're standing by a long brick wall in Southwark, just south of the Thames. It doesn't look like much, but this is all that's left of the Marshalsea, one of London's most notorious prisons. The wall marked the prison's southern edge. On the other side is the old churchyard of St George's, now a small garden. Look there for the council's plaque, and for a paving stone about Charles Dickens's father.
