You're standing at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, one of the oldest churches in Milan. It went up at the end of the fourth century, back when Milan was a capital of the Roman Empire. Start with the row of tall columns on the square. They're Roman, and they were moved here once the church was finished. On the same square stands a bronze statue of Emperor Constantine, a copy of an ancient original in Rome.
