You're standing at the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, one of the oldest churches in Milan. In front of the entrance is a wide courtyard, framed by a gallery of arches. Take a close look at the capitals on top of the columns. There are lions, wild boars, human heads and angels, plus strange fantasy creatures older than the Romanesque style itself. Above the façade sits a loggia, where bishops once stood to bless the people of the city.
