You're standing at the Castello Sforzesco, Milan's great brick castle. First, look at the tall tower in the middle of the front wall. That's the Torre del Filarete, named after the architect who designed it in the fifteenth century. What you see is actually a copy. The original tower was used to store gunpowder, and it blew up in 1521. It was rebuilt around 1900 from old drawings. The tops of the two round corner towers are modern too.
