You're standing at San Bernardino alle Ossa, a church in Milan with a rather striking name. Ossa means bones, and that's not a figure of speech. Start with the façade. It was only finished in 1776, giving the church the look it has today. The building itself is Baroque, designed by architect Carlo Giuseppe Merlo. He rebuilt it after a major fire in 1712, and the new church was completed in 1717. Merlo chose a central plan and a grander front, to make room for the growing stream of pilgrims.
