You're standing on the Place de la Bastille, and right in the middle of the square rises the July Column. Forty-seven metres tall, all of it bronze. It doesn't remember some ancient battle, but three summer days: the 27th, 28th and 29th of July 1830. The French call them the Trois Glorieuses, the three glorious days. That's when King Charles the Tenth fell and Louis-Philippe came to power.
