You're standing at the Château de Vincennes, on the eastern edge of Paris, next to the Bois de Vincennes. Look up at the keep, the great central tower. It's fifty-two metres tall, and when it was finished around 1370, it was the tallest fortified structure in Europe. Around the château runs a wall more than a kilometre long, with a deep moat.
