You're standing at the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan, right in the heart of the Marais in Paris. Behind these walls is the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme, or mahJ for short. It's the largest museum of Jewish art and history in France. And its location is no accident. Since the late eighteenth century, many Jews have lived in the Marais, first immigrants from Eastern Europe, later from North Africa. Have a look around. Most of the old traditional shops have given way to trendy boutiques, but the neighbourhood is still packed with museums.
