You're standing at the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus. In Turkish it's called Tekfur Sarayı, the Palace of the Sovereign. Take a look at the tall façade in front of you. Red brick and white marble form geometric patterns, a signature of the late Byzantine period. This is one of the very few Byzantine palaces still standing in Istanbul, and a rare example of Byzantine architecture that wasn't built as a church.
