You're standing at the Jewish Museum of Turkey, in Galata. Its official name is the Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews. Quite a mouthful. The building behind the gate used to be a synagogue, the Zülfaris Synagogue. The name probably comes from a Persian phrase meaning something like "the fringe of a bride". Lovely image, isn't it?
