You're standing at Rumelihisarı, the Rumelian Fortress, on the hills along the European shore of the Bosphorus, in Istanbul's Sarıyer district. Look at the water first. This is where the strait is at its narrowest, just 660 metres wide. On the far side, on the Asian shore, sits this fortress's older sister, Anadoluhisarı, built between 1393 and 1394.
