You're standing on the little square in front of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, with the church of San Rocco right next door. Scuola sounds like school, but that's not what it was. This was the home of a confraternity, a brotherhood of wealthy Venetians founded in 1478, at a time when plague was raging in the city. They chose Saint Roch, San Rocco, as their patron, because he was seen as a protector against plague. His relics are kept in the church beside you, which is exactly why the brothers wanted to build here.
