You're standing by Santa Maria Formosa, a church right in the heart of Venice. Its formal name is the Church of the Purification of Mary, but hardly anyone calls it that. The nickname comes with a surprising story. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary once appeared here disguised as a voluptuous, shapely woman. Formosa means something like beautifully formed.
