You're standing at the Marciana Library, on Saint Mark's Square in Venice. Its long façade looks straight across at the Doge's Palace. At street level there's an arcade of Doric columns, now home to shops and cafés. Above it runs a row of Ionic arches with a frieze full of cherubs, fruit baskets and garlands. And right on top, a balustrade with obelisks and statues of classical gods and heroes. The architect Andrea Palladio called it perhaps the richest building since ancient times.
