Bridge of Sighs in Venice

You're standing by the Bridge of Sighs, the Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian. It's that white, enclosed bridge high above the narrow canal, the Rio di Palazzo. On either side stand two very different buildings. On one side is the Doge's Palace, home to the courtrooms and interrogation rooms. On the other is the New Prison, a stern, almost bare building that looks like a fortress. The bridge joins the two. A direct link like this between a palace and a prison is one of a kind.
