You're standing at the Mémorial de la France combattante, the Memorial to Fighting France, at the foot of Fort Mont-Valérien in Suresnes, just west of Paris. This is France's most important memorial to those who fought for the country in the Second World War. Start with that long pink wall. It runs for a hundred and fifty metres, built of sandstone from the Vosges. Set into it are sixteen bronze reliefs, each by a different sculptor, eight on either side. Together they tell the story of the war's phases, its battlefields and its fighters.
