You're standing on the Nassauplein, a long, rectangular square in The Hague's Archipelbuurt neighbourhood. It has only 43 house numbers, so it's a pretty quiet spot. Hard to imagine now, but this used to be a canal. It was covered over in 1883, and in the early twentieth century the water was filled in. It hasn't vanished completely, though. Water from the Haagse Beek stream still runs beneath the square. At the far end it passes under the Javastraat and tumbles out through a little waterfall into the Willemspark.
