You're standing at City Gate, the way into Valletta. In Maltese it's called Bieb il-Belt, simply the door of the city. Take a good look. It isn't really a gate at all, more a breach cut into the old bastions. Two huge blocks of stone frame the opening, and tall steel blades separate them from the city walls. The Italian architect Renzo Piano designed it, and it was finished in 2014.
