You're standing at Fort Saint Elmo, right at the tip of the peninsula that Valletta is built on. Have a look around. On one side is the Grand Harbour, on the other Marsamxett Harbour. This fort guarded the way into both. Notice the sharp angles in the walls? It's a star fort, shaped so defenders could hit any attacker from the side.
