You're standing at the Grote Sint-Laurenskerk, Alkmaar's great church of Saint Lawrence. Start with the walls. The church is built of brick, but clad on the outside in white natural stone. Then look at the huge windows in the end walls of the transept. They're among the largest in Western Europe. And see the little tower on top, right where the roofs cross? That dates from 1525, and it holds the bells.
