You're standing on Odeonsplatz in Munich, in front of the Feldherrnhalle. Take a good look at this big open hall. Does it ring a bell? It might. King Ludwig I of Bavaria had it built between 1841 and 1844, modelled on the famous Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Architect Friedrich von Gärtner built it from limestone quarried in Kelheim. Before that, a Gothic city gate stood right here, the Schwabinger Tor.
