You're standing at Museum Brandhorst, a museum of modern and contemporary art in Munich's Kunstareal, the city's art district. Take a good look at the façade. From a distance it looks like an abstract painting, but up close you'll see thousands of slim vertical slats. There are thirty-six thousand of them, all ceramic, glazed in twenty-three different colours. Take a few steps to the side and the colours seem to shift with you. The design is by the architects Sauerbruch Hutton. The building itself is long and rectangular, just two storeys high. Right next door is the Pinakothek der Moderne, another major art museum.
