You're standing at St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków. From out here you can't see it yet, but behind the high altar stands one of Poland's great national treasures: the altarpiece of Veit Stoss. Poles call him Wit Stwosz. He was a German-born sculptor who lived and worked in this city for more than twenty years. Between 1477 and 1489 he carved this huge Gothic altar out of wood.
