You're standing at Piłsudski's Mound, also known as the Independence Mound or Freedom Mound. It sits on the Sowiniec Heights, on the western side of Kraków. Take a good look at its shape. This isn't a natural hill. It's a huge pile of earth, raised by people. It stands thirty-five metres tall and measures about a hundred and eleven metres across at the base. Kraków has four of these mounds, and this one is the youngest and the biggest.
