You're standing on Lordship Lane in Tottenham, in front of Bruce Castle. Don't let the name fool you. This isn't a castle, and it never was. It's a sixteenth-century manor house, and one of the oldest surviving brick houses in England. The name comes from the Bruce family, who once owned part of the land here. When Robert the Bruce became King of Scots in 1306, he lost his English estates. Centuries later, Henry Hare, the second Baron Coleraine, gave the house its grand castle name.
