You're standing on the Markt in Delft, facing the City Hall, right by the Nieuwe Kerk, the New Church. Look up along that slender tower. It's more than a hundred and eight metres tall. In the whole country, only the Dom Tower in Utrecht is higher. Building it took exactly a century, from 1396 to 1496. The spire you see today was designed by Pierre Cuypers, after lightning had damaged the old one. The top section is sandstone, which air pollution is slowly turning dark.
