You're standing at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, on the Museumpark. Look at that tall brick tower. It belongs to the oldest part of the museum, from 1935, designed by city architect Van der Steur. He combined brick and sandstone in colours running from grey through yellow to deep red, topped with a copper gutter. The tower was controversial at the time. Van der Steur said it was needed to draw your eye upward. His belief was that a museum should be a backdrop for art, with good light and stairs that don't wear you out.
