You're standing at the Halle Gate, where the Rue Haute meets the road to Waterloo. This gate was built in 1381, and it's the only one of Brussels' city gates still standing. The second city wall once had seven of them, roughly following the Small Ring road you see traffic circling today. The gate takes its name from the road that left here for the town of Halle.
