You're standing at the Betuwe War Museum, known as The Island, in the village of Heteren. That name, The Island, refers to the strip of land between the Rhine and the Waal rivers, right where you are now. From September 1944, fierce fighting took place here, involving soldiers of no fewer than sixteen different nationalities. That battle is what this museum is all about. It has been open since 1995.
